Monitor Torrents from Droid 2.0 & 2.1

If you have recently followed the previous post dealing with setting up a pptp vpn connection on your droid for remote monitoring and file sharing, you have come to find out that when you are not connected to wifi or 3G your remote connection can at times be slow. When you are busy, on the go, but want to make sure you have your files downloaded when you get home, follow this quick start guide. This guide will allow you to remotely download, monitor, and maintain torrents from your home PC all from your Android device. I will be listing all the steps necessary to remotely monitor torrents from your Android Device. We are going to be covering uTorrent installation (although any torrent utility with a web management utility should work) , uTorrent Configuration, Networking setups, and finally Android Application configuration. It may sound like a lot, but don’t fear. Following this tutorial should only take a few minutes.

First of all, we need to install and configure uTorrent on your home machine. I will not go into the fine details regarding complex configurations, but merely how to install uTorrent and configure the web interface.

  1. Download and install  uTorrent from this link.
  2. The general installation of uTorrent should be as easy as following the on screen directions. If you are having issues, I would suggest looking around the site for a general installation guide.
  3. Once uTorrent is installed, double click your desktop icon to open the application.
  4. Navigate to “options” and then “preferences” in the mnu bar
  5. In the right pane, select “Web UI”
  6. in the Web UI menu to the right, select the checkbox labled “Enable Web UI”
  7. Under Authentication, type in a username and password. NOTE* remember this username and password for future configuration. It is also important to make sure this password and username is strong. We are going to be opening a por tup on your wireless router which will allow access to the Utorrent interface.
  8. Under Connectivity, check “alternative listening port” and type in “8080″.
  9. Once completed, click “Apply”, and then “OK”. Refer to the picture below for a reference.

So we have successfully configured uTorrent, so now it is time to patch a hole in our firewall/router to gain outside access to uTorrent.

  1. Go to Start->Run-> and type “cmd” and hit enter
  2. write down your gateway address, this is most likely the address of your wireless router
  3. Open up your web broswer, and navigate to your gateway address. For example, I will go to http://192.168.1.1
  4. You should be presented with a log in screen. Different manufacturers have different default credentials. For linksys Routers, the username is most likely “admin” as well as the password.
  5. After you log onto your router, head over to the section labeled “Application and Gaming” and then the sub tab “Port Forward” ***This may be different for your specific wireless router! Not all routers are created equally. Basically you want to navigate to a screen which allows port forwarding. For a list of  methods and ways to configure port forwarding on numerous amounts of routers, please follow this link
  6. Once you are at the port forward screen, we need to make a rule for your android device to gain access to the uTorrent web server. Follow the picture and guidelines below.
  • for “application” you can name it whatever you would like. I chose to name it “Droid” so I can keep track of my port forwards.
  • for the Start to End fields, simply place in the port you configured in the uTorrent Web Administration. If you followed this guide, you will put in “8080″ in both fields. Under protocol, select “Both” or “TCP”
  • For IP address, go back to the command prompt where you found your gateway address. Copy the IP address listed on that screen into the IP Address box on the web form. Be sure to check “Enable” and then hit save. *NOTE: You may want to assign a static IP to your machine. If your machine is running on dhcp, your port forward can change and break without you knowing. I will not be covering how to assign a static IP but it is highly recommended and their are multiple tutorials out there.
  • Once completed, verify you save your config and exit the web browser.

Now it is time to finally configure your Android / Droid to monitor and manage your torrents. This is the home stretch. First Verify uTorrent is running on your PC, and you have properly configured your wireless router before continuing!

  1. Go to the “Market” on your droid device on download “Torrent-Fu”
  2. Once installed launch the application
  3. Select “Profiles” and then select “Add Profile”
  4. Under Nickname,  assign it a random name such as “My Desktop”
  5. Under Type, select uTorrent
  6. On your desktop Navigate to http://whatismyip.com and write down your public IP address.
  7. Enter your public IP address into the Host field in torrent-fu
  8. For the  port, enter in 8080
  9. For username, enter in admin or whichever username you selected while configuring uTorrents Web Interface
  10. For password, enter in whatever password you selected while configuring uTorrents Web Interface
  11. Select “Save”
  12. Hit back and select “Manage Torrents” . Select the profile you just created. If this was a success you are monitoring any torrents that are currently downloading on your system.
  13. To remotely download a torrent, select “keyword Search” and then type in the file you are looking for.
  14. For my example, I selected the Ubuntu torrent and hit download.

That is it! Now you can manage, monitor, and download your torrents while on the go! Any questions post in the comments below, I am sure I have missed something!
